Langtang Short Trek: Best Time, Itinerary and Cost

Why Choose the Langtang Short Trek?

Table of Contents

Not everyone has two or three weeks for the Himalaya. The Langtang Short Trek packs glacier views, rhododendron forests, Tamang villages and a famous monastery into just 7 days, starting with a drive from Kathmandu rather than a flight. That makes it one of the most efficient big-mountain experiences in Nepal.

You walk through Langtang National Park, often called the “Valley of Glaciers,” toward the 7,000 m wall of Langtang Lirung, and finish at Kyanjin Gompa (about 3,900 m). The trek is rated moderate, needs no climbing skills, and suits first-timers who are reasonably fit.

Northern Trekking Team offers this route as the Langtang Short Trek, a private or group trek with a licensed guide, porters and all permits.

Best Time for the Langtang Short Trek

The best seasons are spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November), when skies are clear and trails are dry. Because Langtang is short and not extremely high, it can also be walked in winter by prepared trekkers.

Season Conditions Verdict
Autumn (Sep-Nov) Clear skies, crisp air, sharp mountain views Best overall
Spring (Mar-May) Warm days, blooming rhododendrons, some afternoon haze Excellent
Winter (Dec-Feb) Cold, dry and quiet, with snow possible at Kyanjin Good with warm gear
Monsoon (Jun-Aug) Rain, leeches, slippery trails, hidden views Avoid

Our pick: October to mid-November for views, or April for flowers. Northern Trekking Team currently lists fixed departures in November and December 2026, plus private dates on request.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day Route Time Overnight altitude
1 Kathmandu to Syabrubesi (drive) 6-7 hrs 1,460 m
2 Syabrubesi to Lama Hotel 6-7 hrs 2,560 m
3 Lama Hotel to Langtang Village 6-7 hrs 3,430 m
4 Langtang Village to Kyanjin Gompa 3-4 hrs 3,900 m
5 Kyanjin Gompa to Lama Hotel 6-7 hrs 2,560 m
6 Lama Hotel to Syabrubesi 5-6 hrs 1,460 m
7 Drive back to Kathmandu 6-7 hrs 1,400 m

Day 1: Kathmandu to Syabrubesi

A scenic drive northwest through Trisuli and Dhunche brings you to Syabrubesi, the gateway to Langtang. You pass forests, waterfalls and farming villages before the first night in a teahouse.

Day 2: Syabrubesi to Lama Hotel

The trek starts by crossing a suspension bridge and entering Langtang National Park. The trail climbs through dense forest beside the Langtang River to Lama Hotel, a small forest settlement. Keep your eyes open for langur monkeys and, with luck, red pandas in the bamboo.

Day 3: Lama Hotel to Langtang Village

The forest opens into wide valley meadows, and Langtang Lirung (7,246 m) appears ahead. You arrive in Langtang Village, a Tamang community rebuilt after the 2015 earthquake, where your stay directly supports local families.

Day 4: Langtang Village to Kyanjin Gompa

A shorter day through yak pastures and mani walls leads to Kyanjin Gompa, the cultural heart of the valley, with views of Langtang Lirung, Yala Peak and glaciers. The local cheese factory is a highlight, and the afternoon is free to rest or walk toward Kyanjin Ri.

Day 5: Optional Viewpoint and Descent to Lama Hotel

Many trekkers use the early morning for a viewpoint hike above Kyanjin Gompa, followed by the long descent to Lama Hotel. See the tip below on how to handle this day.

Days 6-7: Return to Syabrubesi and Kathmandu

Retrace the forest trail to Syabrubesi, then take the drive back to Kathmandu, where a farewell dinner and a hot shower await.

Pacing Tip for Day 5

Tserko Ri (about 5,000 m) is a long round trip from Kyanjin, usually around 7-8 hours, and the descent to Lama Hotel is another 6-7. For most people, the safer plan is Kyanjin Ri (about 4,773 m) on a shorter morning, or adding an extra night at Kyanjin for Tserko Ri. Ask your operator which option suits your group and fitness.

Kathmandu to Syabrubesi About US$8-10 by public bus, or US$150-200 for a private jeep

Guide About US$25-40 per day
Porter About US$20-30 per day

Going independently can look cheaper on paper, but a package covers permits, transport, guide, porter and gear loan together, which is why many trekkers choose it.

Permits and Visa

  • Langtang National Park entry permit: about NPR 3,000 for foreigners (some sources add 13% VAT).
  • TIMS card: trekker registration, with requirements and pricing changing, so confirm with your operator.
  • Visa: a 15-day tourist visa (US$30) covers this 7-day trek. See the operator’s passport and visa information.

Your trekking company usually arranges the permits for you.

How Difficult Is the Langtang Short Trek?

The trek is moderate. Days involve 5-7 hours of walking with steady ascents, forest trails and a few rocky sections. The gain from Syabrubesi (1,460 m) to Kyanjin Gompa (3,900 m) in only four days is fast, so acclimatization needs care.

  • Walk slowly and drink 3-4 liters of water a day.
  • Tell your guide immediately about headache, nausea or dizziness.
  • Do not climb higher if symptoms worsen, and descend if needed.
  • Read the operator’s altitude tips before you go.

No technical skills are required, but good cardio fitness helps. Hiking, stair climbing or jogging for 4-6 weeks beforehand makes a big difference.
