Ladakh With Markha Valley Trek refers to the land of high passes, which is the ex-Kingdom of Buddhists and considered as one of the most demanding regions for trekking in India. The people living in this region are mostly followed by Tibetan Buddhism and is one of the unfrequented trails of India and hence allowing trekkers to experience untouched beauty and landscape along with a peaceful environment. Ladhak (also known as Little Tibet) is also considered as one of the highest inhabited plateaus in the world offering diverse trekking and climbing in trans-Himalayas with unique a chance to explore the unique culture, ruined fort and spiritual Gompas. Markha valley is one of the most beautiful valleys in Ladhak with wild and barren landscapes, which is situated near Tibet. The trekking trail leading to this wonderful destination follows the way exhibiting lush green to yellow barren landscapes alongside the Indus River. Hemis National Park and Gandala La and Kongmaru La are the promising attractions while trekking towards Markha Valley along with stunning views of Kang Yissay and Stok Kangri peaks.

Ladakh With Markha Valley Trek starts with a flight taking you to Delhi and further a flight leading you to Leh. You can visit Leh Bazaar, Royal Palace and Shanti Stupa in Leh and acclimatization visit to Shey Palace and Thiksey Monastery, while in Leh. From Leh, a comfortable drive will take you to Chiling, from where your actual trek is started and leads the way passing through Markha Valley Camp, Tchutchse, Nimling, Chodgo, Shang Sundo and lastly Hemis Gompa. After trekking these trails, drive back to Leh and visit Phyang Monastery in Phyang Valley and finally fly back to Delhi, completing your wonderful trek.

Day 1 : Arrival at Leh from Delhi (Flight)

A comforting flight from Delhi will take you to Leh. You can visit Leh Bazaar, Royale Palace, and Shanti Stupa in Leh. Overnight stay at a hotel in Leh

Day 2 : Drive to Chulling and Trek to Skiu

Today, we will be starting our actual trekking journey. A comforting drive from Leh will take you to Chilling, the actual starting point of this trek. We will be trekking for about 2-3 hours from Chilling crossing Zanskar River with the entrance in Hemis National Park to reach Skiu. Overnight stay at a homestay in Skiu.

Day 3 : Trek to Markha

Trekking on the side of the river, passing the Markha pass, we will reach the beautiful village of Markha. Markha is a beautiful village with charm nature and climate, perfect for chilling. You can also visit old monasteries and ruins, while in Markha Village. Overnight stay at a homestay in Markha.

Day 4 : Trek to Hankar

Today, we will be trekking for around 11 kilometers to reach today’s destination. We will be walking through the river for about 4-5 hours to reach Hankar. You can see Gompa in Umlung village on the way. Overnight stay at a homestay in Hankar.

Day 5 : Trek to Nimaling

Following the path of Hankar village, we will reach Nimaling in about 5-6 hours of our trek. Overnight stay in Nimaling.

Day 6 : Trek to Kongmaru La and Shang Sumdo

Today, we are facing our longest day trek. The trek is estimated at around 17 kilometers and can be completed in about 8 hours. Initiated today’s trek, you will reach Kongmaru La in a few hours, from where you can enjoy the amazing views of Kang Yatse and Karakoram Peak. From here, crossing several rivers simultaneously, you will reach Shang Sumdo. Overnight stay in Shang Sumdo.

Day 7 : Trek to Hemis

Following the path from Shang Sumdo, you will reach Hemis Monastery. You can also visit the monastery by taking a jeep. Overnight stay in Hemis.

Information: Acute Mountain Sickness

OVERCOMING ALTITUDE PROBLEM

This is often known as Acute Mountain Sickness, which is particularly a matter of important medical consideration while trekking in the Himalayas. Altitude Sickness means the effect of altitude on those who ascend too promptly to elevations above 3,000 meters. Early mountain sickness will manifest itself in headaches, shortness of breath, nausea, fatigue, etc. It can be encountered as initials of the sickness. The major information source on the prevention and treatment of the sickness is the Northern Trekking Team. We inform every trekker that all our guides have followed the training conducted by HRA with the understated information.

HIGH ALTITUDE SYMPTOMS

1. ACUTE MOUNTAIN SICKNESS

3. HIGH ALTITUDE CEREBRAL EDEMA (Water in the head)

DECISION MAKING

Find out the main problem of altitude.
If you find high altitude problems with mild symptoms, stay at the same altitude until the symptoms are completely gone.
Take an Aspirin tablet, try to go up but check to your body. If symptoms are worsening, descend at once.
If you feel very bad even going down, should be flown up.
PREVENTION

Acclimatization: Go hiking up to 2/3 hundred meters above from the place where you’ve stayed.
Drink more water 4-5ltrs a day.
Always walk slowly.
Do not travel alone.
No alcohol, No sleeping in the day time, and smoking.
Do not carry heavy packs.
TREATMENT

Descend is the best medicine; do not wait for the Helicopter.
High altitude medicine. (Diamox, before dinner, for a sleeping problem)
Gamow Bag.
Oxygen.
If you have worsening symptoms, descend at once.
If you have mild symptoms, do not go higher, stay at the same place until getting better.
Do not leave your trek member behind unattended, either trekker or porter.
